Cherokee Bike Trails, Cherokee, NC: Design and Construction of a complete Mountain Bike Trail System
CONTRACT: $340,000/Nov 2016-April 2017
Starting in November 2016 and finished in the spring of 2017, Trail Dynamics created a shared-use trail system for the Eastern Band of Cherokee in Cherokee, NC. This turnkey 12-mile trail system was built for hiking, mountain biking and intended to provide the Cherokee Indian Tribe with a destination trail system to provide recreation for the local community, and attract mountain bike tourism to the area. The trail system has beginner, intermediate, and advance trails with over 1,200 LF of wood structures and 100 LF of rock armoring work. Trail Dynamics also created and installed the trail signage package and trailhead Kiosk. The trails will also provide a venue for local running and bike races, and provide a racecourse for the local Cherokee High School Mountain Bike Program.

SVBC (Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition) Harrisonburg, VA: New Trail Construction and Trail Maintenance

In the fall of 2016, Trail Dynamics returned for our third contract with SVBC to work on trail re-routes, and trail maintenance in the George Washington NF west of Harrisonburg, VA. This most recent contract involved re-routes and reconstruction of some iconic trails in the area, such as Wolfe Ridge and Chestnut Ridge Trails. This contract involved technical trail construction and extensive rock armoring work.

USFS Brown Mountain OHV Trail System, Morganton, NC: Trail Maintenance Contract AG 12467018F0173R1

Trail Dynamics did extensive maintenance work on Trail- 1A at Brown Mountain Off Highway Trail System. The work included major re-grading of the trail tread to establish positive drainage along the heavily eroded trail. This work included constructing rolling-grade dips, de-berming, turn piking, rock armoring, and installation of Tri-Lock blocks for erosion control.

USFS UWHARRIE NF, Albemarle, NC,: New Trail Construction and Maintenance.

Our first project for 2016 was in the Uwharrie NF working on the Super Tree and Keyauwee Trail building 3 separate re-routes and performing trail maintenance work. Drainage structures were constructed and maintained along the existing sections of trail. Re-routes were constructed on the Supertree Trail to provide an alternative to eroded fall line sections, increase mileage, and improve the trail experience for both hikers and bikers. Major Regrading, Turnpiking and Gravel surfacing work was done in low wet area by raising the trail tread and providing positive drainage.

USFS Fontana Racecourse, Fontana Dam, NC,: New Trail Construction and Maintenance.

As part of an IDIQ contract with the USFS, TD crew performed extensive work on the Fontana Race Course, located near Bryson City, NC. This 15-mile trail is very popular with locals and visitors to the Fontana area and is the racecourse for 2 major mountain bike events a year. The project was an RTP funded, and included a re-route, extensive trail maintenance, construction of a 20’ and 12’ bridges and culvert installation.

PISGAH AREA SORBA, Asheville, NC: Spencer Gap Trail Construction

In the fall of 2015, our firm was awarded the first professional trail contract for new trail construction in the Pisgah National Forest. This RTP funded project was the end result of over 2 years of hard work done behind the scenes by Pisgah Area SORBA bike club to get funding and approval from the USFS. The 2 mile trail project set a new precedent for replacing badly eroded logging roads with new purpose built shared use trail. In keeping with the challenging character of Pisgah Trails, this new trail was constructed 24” wide, and with numerous rideable rock and dirt features. This project was a major success for PAS and the USFS and a great opportunity for Trail Dynamics to set a precedent for professionally built trails in the Pisgah National Forest.

HOOVER COLOR, Hiawassee GA: New Trail Construction

During the 2015 summer, TD had the unique opportunity of working at 150-year-old iron mine located in Hiawassee, VA. The owner, Chuck Hoover, an avid mountain biker, was inspired to convert his decommissioned 250-acre mine into a mountain bike park to eventually be incorporated into the Virginia State Park System. TD was hired by Hoover to design and construct 5 miles of beginner/intermediate trails for the Virginia State Parks, the local bike/hike community, and visitors coming to the area to enjoy the beauty of SW Virginia.

DUPONT STATE RECREATIONAL FOREST: Ridgeline Trail, Jim Branch Trail, Locust Trail

Five years after building the original version of the popular Ridgeline and Jim Branch Trails, TD returned to Dupont to upgrade the trails with a reroute of the lower section and to re-shape the drainage structures for better sustainability and an enhanced rider experience. The results are a much-improved trail that will hold up even better to the hundreds of passes it receives per week during the high-traffic riding season.

RVA MORE RICHMOND, VA: New Trail Construction
Phase 1: $105,000 May-June 2015
TD constructed 5.5 miles of “Green Level” single track at Pocahontas State Park, just outside Richmond, Virginia. This project was funded by Virginia State Parks and a coalition of corporate underwriters and individual supporters. The trails were designed and constructed to make the most of the gently rolling terrain found in the park and helped the club obtain ride center status from IMBA. The club and TD are planning to build the next phase of 5–10 miles of intermediate “Blue Level” trails in 2016.

SORBA WOODSTOCK, GA: New Bike Trail Construction
Phase 1: $150,000 January-March 2015
Design/build contract for the SORBA Woodstock bike club in North Georgia. Cooperating closely with the club, we constructed 8 miles of a new purpose-built MTB trail in Rope Mill Park, which is shared by the Army Corps of Engineers and the City of Woodstock, GA. This exciting project consisted of developing three distinct styles of trails for all skill levels. Phase 1 is now completed and is providing an extremely diverse MTB experience for young riders, beginners and intermediate riders, as well as providing advanced features and alternate ride options for advanced riders. In addition to dirt work, the trails have over 150 LF of wood structures and 120 LF of rock armoring.

Powder Mountain, Eden, Utah: Trail Construction Services
Contract Phase 1: $125,000 September-October 2014
Trail Dynamics worked under contract with IMBA Trail Solutions, and the Summit Corporation to construct the first XC mountain bike trails on this 10,000-acre Powder Mountain Ski Area is near Ogden, Utah. The 8-mile XC loop that the six-person TD crew is currently building represents the first phase of a multiphase plan to open up the mountain to all levels of the sport. Next spring, TD will return to Powder Mountain to build an intermediate trail loop as well as more advanced black diamond trail options. The goal of this multiphase plan is to position Powder Mountain as one of the best mountain bike destinations in the Western United States.

Lake Lure Mountain Bike/Hiking Trail Design and Construction

Trail Dynamics has been contracted to design and build a regional destination mountain biking and hiking trail system for the town of Lake Lure, NC. The first 5 miles of this trail system is completed, and design work is currently underway for the next 7 miles of trail to be constructed in the fall of 2014. The goal of this trail system is to provide family recreational opportunities for the local community and to attract new trail-based tourism to Lake Lure.

14) Sumter National Forest/ Chattooga Trail Construction Contract $130,000 / July-August 2014
Under contract with the USFS, Trail Dynamics constructed 8 miles of multi-use trail adjacent to the Chattooga River in the upstate of South Carolina. This project also included rock armoring drainages and creek crossings, as well as crib wall construction and half-culvert installation.

Mammoth Cave National Park Trail Construction Project
Budget $400,000 completed summer of 2013
In the summer of 2013, Trail Dynamics constructed the first mountain trail in the National Park system. This project included 15 miles of purpose built XC mountain biking trail, and 2 miles of gravel surfaced equestrian trail and a 24’x 8’pedestrian bridge. IMBA, (International Mountain Bicyclist
Association), selected the Mammoth Cave Trail the mid-western regional Gateway Trail award for 2013 and in 2014, it was awarded the world’s best Gateway Trail at the IMBA summit in Steamboat Springs CO.

Tom Brown Park and Phipps Park (Tallahassee, FL) 2009-2013 Budget: $375,000, completed 2013
In 2009, the City of Tallahassee, FL, warded Trail Dynamics the contract to redesign and re-construct the city’s mountain bike trail system. The 5-year, multi-year contract created one of the most popular trail systems in the South East, with riding options for all levels of mountain biking, from beginner to racer. During this multiphase project, TD constructed the “Kudzilla” P, B, &J (pump, berm, and jump) trail as well as a 60’x 16’ wood wall ride structure.

Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition (Harrisonburg, VA) 2011/2012 Budget $220,000
For this project, Trail Dynamics was awarded 2 separate contracts with the Shenandoah Bicycle Coalition to reroute bike/hike trails in the North River District of the Jefferson National Forest. This contract included multiple trail projects aimed at enhancing the rider experience and improving sustainability. As the local club comprised many advanced riders interested in challenging trails, TD invested a considerable amount of time and effort to build advanced ride features on the trail. Extensive rock armoring and numerous advanced rock alternate lines were constructed at every opportunity. The cumulative distance for these 2 independent trail contracts was 15+ miles.

Greenville Parks and Recreation/Gateway Park Project
Budget: $50,000 February 2013
Trail Dynamics designed and build a bike park for Greenville, Co Parks, and Recreation, Travelers Rest, SC. This park has become a very popular mountain bike destination for locals and mountain bike tourists. The park consists of a pump track, a PB&J (pump, berm, &jump) trail, dirt jumps, wooden drops, boardwalks, and the XC trail.

Munson Hills Trail Enhancement Project (USFS) 2010/2011 Budget: $300,000
This project involved the assessment, re-design, and re-construction of over 25 miles of cross-country mountain bike trails in the Apalachicola NF in Tallahassee Fl. This groundbreaking project involved terraforming and surfacing poor, loose sandy trails with compacted clay. This greatly improved the ride-ability of the Pine Forest trails for all skill levels and transformed the Munson Hills into one of the most popular trails in the Tallahassee area.

Valmont Bike Park (City of Boulder, CO) 2010 Budget $240,000
Trail Dynamics was contracted by Alpine Bike Parks to construct 8+ miles of X country trails and technical trail features for the Valmont Bike Park. A great degree of emphasis was placed on making the trail system exciting, fun, and challenging for riders of all levels. Numerous trail features such as berms, rollers, and small jumps were seamlessly integrated into the trails. Alternate lines and TTFs (technical trail features) allowed for riders to naturally progress to more challenging terrain at their own pace and comfort level.

Dupont State Forest (NCFS)
Over the past 12 years, Trail Dynamics has worked on numerous projects that have help make the Dupont State Recreational Forest one of the most popular mountain biking destinations in the SE. Over the years, Trail Dynamics has constructed many Iconic trails such as “Ridgeline Tr.” “Laurel Mnt. Tr”, “Reasonover Tr”, Burnt Mnt.Tr, and Cornmill Shoals Tr, and Mine Mountain TR that have help attracted mountain bike tourism to the Brevard area.

Rocky Knob Bike Park in Boone, NC
Trail Dynamics was contracted by the Boone Area Cyclist and Watauga County, NC, to design and build a complete bike park for the Boone Area. This bike park was completed in the spring of 2012 and has become one of the premier bike parks in the SE. It includes XC trails, the Pump Berm and Jump Trail, three skills areas, and multiple elevated ride features.
